Mausoleum at Lovćen Info

At mountain Lovćen there is a mausoleum dedicated to Bishop Petar II Petrovic Njegos. Its beauty is breathless and it dominates from Jezerski Vrh (peak) 1660m. That place a famous poet and philosopher chose for his eternal rest. Njegos’ Testament to rest there fulfilled Prince Danilo, and brought with conspicuous Montenegrins his remains at the top, into the realm of lightning. But not only lightning disturb Bishop’s eternal sleep. Jezerski vrh was a target of Turks first, then Austrians, who destroyed he chapel completely. A new chapel was raised in 1925, but there was also a new idea of building a new, great monument, a mausoleum. Mausoleum of Njegos was built from 1970 to 1974 and represents a masterpiece of a Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović who mixed architecture and art, with two marble caryatids at the entrance to the chapel. Caryatids represent Montenegrin women who symbolically keep the crypt, and at the front is a monumental figure of Njegos carved in granite, heavy 28 tons. Mausoleum of Njegos is the highest mausoleum in the world. From the car park to the magnificent building of Mausoleum lead 461 stairs up to the peak.
